About Senkodo

In the winter of 1981, Senichi Makimura started photographing shows in a Shinjuku basement — nobody had asked him to. He sold cameras by day to pay for film and spent every night in one venue or another. Forty-five years later, he still does.

Senkodo is the small organisation that keeps those negatives — 2,612 shows, 310,000 frames — catalogued, preserved and printed. Most of the bands are long gone. The nights they made are still loud inside these photographs.

Every print is a silver gelatin print, made one at a time by Makimura in his own darkroom. That is why editions are small.
